The Road not taken
The poem 'The Road Not
Taken' by the American poet Robert Frost was first published in 1916 in a
collection entitled 'Mountain Interval'. It is about the journey of life and
contains a deep, hidden meaning. It is about decisions people make during their
lives and the doubts they have after making the decisions; whether it was right
or not. A traveler is passing through a forest in autumn season. He comes to a
point where the road is divided into two. He has to choose one. Thus the poem
depicts the problem making a right choice in life. We have to choose between an
off-beaten path and a path chosen by many people.

SHORT ANSWER TYPE
QUESTIONS
Answer the following
questions in 30 words each.
1. Which road did the
poet choose? Why did he do so?
Ans. While travelling in the wood, the poet came
across two roads. He had to choose one as he could not travel on both the
roads. The road which the poet decided to take was grassy and very few
travellers had walked along that road. He chose the second road because it was,
more inviting and ‘wanted wear'.
2. What was the poet's
dilemma in the poem "The Road Not Taken"?
Ans. The poet faces the dilemma of making a right
decision. While travelling in the wood he comes across a fork on the road. He

symbolic of the choices we make in our lives. It is just not possible to make
more than one choice. So, the poet decides to take the road less travelled.

in his life.
4. What do you think
is the central idea of the poem?
Ans. The central idea of the poem is that our future
happiness depends on the right choices we make in life. Life offers many
choices and alternatives. But we should choose our path with utmost care so
that we do not repent in future.
